ABOUT

In December 2007, when I was the baker at Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center, a thought popped into my head: I’m going to learn how to write Torah script. With no background in visual art or calligraphy, I had to start at the beginning. One letter led to another, and a couple of years later I was invited to write my first torah scroll on display at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, CA. I have always loved language, and believe that words and stories can shape our lives. I am fluent in Modern Hebrew and honored to be transcribing texts that serve as a shared conversation piece for Jews from ancient Persia to contemporary Paris – across space and time.

In addition to writing four torah scrolls, I have experience as a Judaic Studies teacher, a synagogue school coordinator, and was the Senior Online Learning Coordinator for My Jewish Learning during the pandemic. Recently I have shifted focus to scroll repair and community education. With a BA in theatre arts, I delight in offering people of all ages a glimpse onto the world of sacred writing. I lead educational programs in person and on Zoom for congregations all over the country, and have been a scholar-in-residence at more than a dozen synagogues. Originally from Philadelphia, I now based in the Hudson Valley, NY.

My claim to fame: my hand is featured writing the word b’reishit on Sefaria.

I am over the moon! This lesson and the supplies are fantastic, and I cannot wait to share this information with my teachers. The ideas, the facts, and the experiences here are exactly what I want these pre-bat/bar mitzvah students to have. IY”H some of our students will learn the foundations of a personal Ahavat Torah through this wonderful experience.
